Montavilla Neighborhood Association July Newsletter

School may be out for the summer, but at the June 14 meeting of the Montavilla Neighborhood Association, the discussions and debates were focused squarely on education.
After carefully considering three requests, the association voted to award proceeds from Thatcher’s upcoming brew fest to Madison High School’s after-hours library program. The festival, which will take place on Aug. 21, at Thatchers (SE 79th and Stark), raised $1,700 last year; organizers hope to exceed that amount this year.
Harrison Park, the largest K-8 public school in Portland, is taking a different approach to raising funds to expand its playground and arts and music program: it’s taking the campaign online. School supporters are seeking funding from Pepsi, which is awarding grants based solely on total votes accumulated during the month. To support the effort, go to www.refresheverything.com, click “Join Refresh Everything,” fill out the form to join and then enter “Harrison Park.” Please vote every day. For more information, e-mail Harrison.park.grants@gmail.com.
Somewhat related, neighbors are unhappy with the condition of the grounds at what was formerly Wilcox School on 74th Avenue between Halsey and Glisan. The facility is no longer used as a school but is still owned by Portland Public Schools. To add your voice to the chorus about how to make the grounds usable and inviting, Montavilla Neighborhood Association will be hosting a forum with invited speakers on July 26th, 7pm, 232 SE 80th Avenue, Montavilla United Methodist Church.
Do your children need health care? If so, Oregon’s new health coverage for uninsured children, Healthy Kids, can help. For more information please contact Jennifer Mangnall at 971-634-0005 or Jennifer@oregonaction.org.
Beyond health, children just need care. Montavilla Neighborhood Association is pleased to announce that we are offering childcare at all meetings through October 2010. Depending on how this service is received we will consider making this permanent. A donation is suggested, but is not mandated.
Remember the night you made your resolutions for 2010? If one of them was to finally learn a new language, you still have time. The Tierra Educational Center in Northeast Portland is offering two series of beginning and intermediate Spanish, the second of which begins in early August. In addition to the language, the courses integrate cultural lessons, offering you the opportunity to delve into a study abroad experience without having to board a plane. For details, please visit www.tierracenter.com or call 503-213-3677.
If educational pursuits leave you hungry, Miles McCoy from 19th Street Farms in West Linn may be your man. The produce in the subscription boxes he delivers to the Montavilla Farmers Market may not be grown in Montavilla, but it’s pretty close. For more information please visit www.19thstreetfarms.com or e-mailinfo@19thstreetfarms.com
In addition to fresh produce, nothing says Summer in Portland quite like outdoor music. Every Tuesday in July, at 6:30 p.m., Concerts in the Park are coming to Mt. Tabor Park. Sponsored by Portland Parks and Recreation, the concerts are free.
Finally, if you want outdoor music and a movie, then the Kids Summer Festival on August 28th might be for you. River City Band has been slated to perform. There will be games, bounce houses and school supply give-aways. This event will be at Montavilla Park, 5pm to 10pm. Bring a picnic and enjoy the day. Movie starts at 8:30pm. This event is free. More information at www.kidsummerfestival.blogspot.com.
During the Kids Summer Festival, school supplies will be given away. To help raise the funds to pay for the supplies, Montavilla Neighborhood Association in collaboration with its partners are asking for donations. It costs $12 to fill a school pack with supplies when bought in bulk. Help sponsor a school pack. Send your donation to Montavilla Neighborhood Association “School Supplies”, P.O. Box 16245, Portland OR 97292. All donations will be directed to school supplies.
The Montavilla Neighborhood Association meets every second Monday, 7:30pm, 232 SE 80th Avenue, Montavilla United Methodist Church. Every fourth Monday, 7pm, same location is Committee Workshops.
On our Workshop night, we discuss any and all issues of immediate concern. Findings from these Workshops are brought to our General or Board meeting for votes. The topic for the July Committee Workshop (July 26th) is Wilcox Elementary School and better use of its grounds. This night is your night to get feedback, partnership and help with issues you are concerned about.
